This is an interesting study that was done about people’s favorite books and music. A Caltech student cross-referenced the music people listed as their favorites along with their favorite books and came up with a chart that plots those favorites in relation to their SAT scores.

The fascinating thing is that people who listed “Lil Wayne” as their favorite music were on the bottom of the list of SAT scores and people who listed “The Holy Bible” as their favorite book were also on the bottom. The only people who scored lower than Bible readers were people who read romance/erotica novels.

This last part makes sense to me, considering there’s no educational value to either of those books. That, and there’s only so many ways you can say the words “suck”, “kiss”, “love” and “rub”. The Bible thing just furthers my opinion of people who blindly believe in religion.

This is a warning to a few guys I know. It’s a lesson for lots of girls out there. It’s a suggestion for certain girls to learn. It’s my genuine want to help certain people move away from destroying themselves.

The more I talk to people, the more I realize what they don’t see. It’s exactly what I didn’t see before. Some of these people have a way to get out but they’re afraid to use it. Here’s some info that might help. Whether they read this or not is another story but the info they need to deal with their situation (one that is very similar to my previous situation) is right here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histrionic_personality_disorder
Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is defined by the American Psychiatric Association as a personality disorder characterized by a pattern of excessive emotionality and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriate seductiveness, usually beginning in early adulthood.

The essential feature of histrionic personality disorder is an excessive pattern of emotionality and attention-seeking behavior. These individuals are lively, dramatic, enthusiastic, and flirtatious. They may be inappropriately sexually provocative, express strong emotions with an impressionistic style, and be easily influenced by others.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependent_Personality_Disorder
Dependent personality disorder (DPD), formerly known as asthenic personality disorder, is a personality disorder that is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people.

Individuals with DPD see relationships with significant others as necessary for survival. They do not define themselves as able to function independently; they have to be in supportive relationships to be able to manage their lives. In order to establish and maintain these life-sustaining relationships, people with DPD will avoid even covert expressions of anger. They will be more than meek and docile; they will be admiring, loving, and willing to give their all. They will be loyal, unquestioning, and affectionate. They will be tender and considerate toward those upon whom they depend (Millon, 1981, p. 114). Dependent individuals play the inferior role to the superior other very well; they communicate to the dominant people in their lives that they are useful, sympathetic, strong, and competent (Millon, 1981, p. 114). With these methods, individuals with DPD are often able to get along with unpredictable, isolated, or unpleasant people (Kantor, 1992, p. 170). To further make this possible, individuals with DPD will approach both their own and others’ failures and shortcomings with a saccharine attitude and indulgent tolerance (Millon, 1981, p. 113). They will engage in a mawkish minimization, denial, or distortion of both their own and others’ negative, self-defeating, or destructive behaviors to sustain an idealized, and sometimes fictional, story of the relationships upon which they depend. They will deny their individuality, their differences, and ask for little other than acceptance and support (Millon & Davis, 1996, p. 332).

Not only will individuals with DPD subordinate their needs to those of others, they will meet unreasonable demands and submit to abuse and intimidation to avoid isolation and abandonment (Millon, 1981, pp.107-108). Dependent individuals so fear being unable to function alone that they will agree with things they believe are wrong rather than risk losing the help of people upon whom they depend (DSM-IV, 1994, p. 665). They will volunteer for unpleasant tasks if that will bring them the care and support they need. They will make extraordinary self-sacrifices to maintain important bonds (DSM-IV, 1994, pp. 665-666). It is important to note that individuals with DPD, in spite of the intensity of their need for others, do not necessarily attach strongly to specific individuals, i.e., they will become quickly and indiscriminately attached to others when they have lost a significant relationship (DSM-IV, 1990, p. 666). It is the strength of the dependency needs that is being addressed; attachment figures are basically interchangeable. Attachment to others is a self-referenced and, at times, haphazard process of securing the protection of the most readily available powerful other willing to provide nurturance and care. Both DPD and HPD are distinguished from other personality disorders by their need for social approval and affection and by their willingness to live in accord with the desires of others. They both feel paralyzed when they are alone and need constant assurance that they will not be abandoned. Individuals with DPD are passive individuals who lean on others to guide their lives. People with HPD are active individuals who take the initiative to arrange and modify the circumstances of their lives. They have the will and ability to take charge of their lives and to make active demands on others (Millon & Davis, 1996, p. 325).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella_complex
The Cinderella Complex was first described by Colette Dowling[1], who wrote a book on women’s fear of independence, as an unconscious desire to be taken care of by others, based primarily on a fear of being independent. The complex is said to become more apparent as a person grows older.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Addiction
The term “addiction” is used in many contexts to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive physical dependence or psychological dependence, such as: drug addiction, video games, crime, alcoholism, compulsive overeating, problem gambling, computer addiction, pornography, etc.

However, common usage of the term addiction has spread to include psychological dependence. In this context, the term is used in drug addiction and substance abuse problems, but also refers to behaviors that are not generally recognized by the medical community as problems of addiction, such as compulsive overeating.

The term addiction is also sometimes applied to compulsions that are not substance-related, such as problem gambling and computer addiction. In these kinds of common usages, the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual’s health, mental state or social life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-harm</a
Self-injury (SI), self-harm (SH) or deliberate self-harm (DSH) is deliberate infliction of tissue damage or alteration to oneself without suicidal intent.

For some people harming oneself can be a way to draw attention to the need for help and to ask for assistance in an indirect way but may also be an attempt to affect others and to manipulate them in some way emotionally.

So I finally got around to approving some of the comments for this blog and I came across one regarding my last post from someone who decided to leave their name as “Mysterious”. While I appreciate the anonymity that the internet provides, I have to question the motive behind such an act. For starters, I’m going to find out who you are. There’s too much information that gets left around when people post stuff online. Second, what’s the point of leaving the post anonymous? Since you didn’t put a real email address, I can’t address the comment directly and you’ll never know that I replied to it. The dialogue ends right where you left it. That’s disappointing to me.

Either way, if you’re up to it, feel free to email me or write a message on Facebook. I won’t bite, I promise…

I’ve been doing this for as long as I can remember. Most of the time, I don’t tell people that I’m doing it and I try to make it as discreet as possible.

It all started a few years ago (don’t really remember exactly when, to be completely honest). My friend Eric and I were at a bar having a great time when a girl walked up to me and simply said “I’m leaving for the night but I just wanted to let you know that I couldn’t stop staring at you and I think you’re incredibly hot.” She didn’t leave a phone number. She didn’t give me her name. She just looked back and smiled as her friends walked with her out the door.

That stuck with me. For no other reason than just to let me know that she thought I was hot, she made me feel good about myself for the rest of the night, no pressure added. I can’t begin to say how awesome that is. Has anyone ever done this to you?

So, from that day forward (or more specifically the day after), if I go to a bar with friends, I try to do the same. I don’t feel like I’ll ever pick a girl up at a bar because most girls who try to find men at the bar are doing so for a reason. I’m not like that. It may happen someday for me. Obviously, I’m at the bar too so I can’t simply look down on someone just because they’re there also but it’s definitely a factor. In the meantime, I make it a point to find a pretty girl and, before the end of the night, to tell her that I think she’s incredibly hot and, in the cases where I see that she’s with some guys, that I hope her guy friends are treating her well and I respecting her. No more, no less. No phone numbers. No names.

There are obvious exceptions to this. If I go to the bar with a girl, I won’t do it. I don’t want to disrespect my girlfriend/guest/friend by doing something like this. Instead, I’ll make sure that my friend feels like the hottest girl there. If she can’t feel like the hottest, then I’ll try to make it so she stops caring about what everyone else thinks. If I don’t find anyone that I genuinely believe is hot, I won’t say anything. I don’t lie unless I absolutely need to (which is pretty much never) so it doesn’t help someone if you’re not genuine. If one of my friends has no objections to taking a girl home and I’m helping them out with that, I won’t say anything over the top. You don’t need to do this to confident girls (truly confident girls, not the fake ones with self-worth issues) but I feel like one day I’ll get some kind of reaction back.

Now, this doesn’t exempt you from talking to girls at the bar while you’re there. Especially if the girl sees you floating around talking to other girls for most of the night, the comment will be especially meaningful. Don’t fuck up your chances of actually meeting new people because you’re too busy trying to prep yourself for a one line closer. You’re not trying to pick them up (literally), you’re trying to pick them up (figuratively). If everyone did this, I think the bar scene would be a better place.

Now, fuck off, douchebags. Get back to Scottsdale.
